Salary Caps & FFP

Salary controls in sport, once regarded as a North American phenomenon, have become a key regulatory pillar of almost every professional sports league in the world. Financial regulations can take many forms – hard caps, soft caps, percentage of turnover caps, luxury taxes and Financial Fair Play – but the common factor is the objective of protecting the financial sustainability of sport.

This is not an area with a one-size-fits-all solution; each financial regulation must be tailored to the specific challenges which the sport seeks to address.

The Northridge team provide market-leading advice on financial regulations to competitions across sport, from established leagues such as Premiership Rugby to new tournaments such as the Women’s Super League. We have extensive experience in advising governing bodies and teams on the application of these rules, including representing AC Milan in their landmark CAS appeal of their UEFA FFP ban.

"The Salary Cap is a key part of Premiership Rugby’s overall strategy towards strengthening the on-field and commercial success of Gallagher Premiership Rugby. The business of professional sports governance requires the right level of legal expertise and Northridge provide this for not only the Salary Cap but also other regulatory and contentious sports law topics for Premiership Rugby."
